Measure for the width of your curtains
(A) Measure the width of your pole or track.
or
(B) Measure the width of the window recess and add 15-20cm either side of your window to allow for the curtain stack back.
Measure for the drop of your curtains
(C) Choose the point at which you would like your curtains to drop to.
- Curtain tracks measure from the top of the track to the finished curtain drop.
- Curtain poles measure from the underside of the pole and for eyelets measure from the topside of the pole.
- If you don’t have a pole or track in place then measure approximately 15-20cm above the window recess to your desired drop.

Calculate fabric for pencil pleat curtains
Width of pole or track x 2 = Fullness.
Fullness divided by width of fabric = Number of widths required.
Drop length + 30cm for hems = Cutting length.
Number of widths x cutting length = Amount of fabric you need.

Calculate fabric for pinch pleat curtains
Pinch pleats give a fuller effect than pencil pleats.
When calculating fabric quantities
Multiply the pole or track width by 2.5 instead of 2.

Calculate fabric for repeat pattern curtains
If the fabric you will be using for your curtains has a repeat pattern, some additional considerations will help make sure the pattern reproduces correctly on the curtains.
Cutting length divided by the PR (pattern repeat) Round this figure up to a whole number if you need to.
Multiply this number by the PR = New cutting length including the PR.
Multiply this by the number of widths required = This is the amount of fabric required for your curtains.
